On our SUPER SUMMER SCHEDULE we are having THINKING THURSDAYS.  On this day, we are going to the library and also working on researching things from our wondering list.

A wondering list is a place kids can write down all the things they are wondering about so they can remember them until they get a chance to find the answers.

I decided to make a cute printable for a wondering list!

THE STUPENDOUS SIX SUMMER PLAN {FREE Printable}

 IF YOU LIKE THIS, PLEASE CONSIDER PINNING IT! THANKS!

So, I’ve got a plan for our mornings with our SUPER SUMMER SCHEDULE. I’ve got a fun READING PROGRAM ready. Now for our afternoons.  I have A LOT to do to get ready to move.  I have to be able to devote a good chunk of time to packing and organizing and fixing things in our house.  I can’t be constantly entertaining bored kids.  Nor do I think that its good for kids to be constantly entertained.  Kids need to have some self directed time.  It is important to me that my kids work on some educational things during the summer.  We haven’t really done this in past summers and I wish we would have.

So, I have come up with the STUPENDOUS SIX, which are six tasks for my kids to do on their own each afternoon while I am working on other things.  My oldest is off on his own now, but my next two sons can do these all on their own.  My five year old will need a little help and my youngest will be napping during this time.

Here they are:

Stupendous six daily activities via remarkable home copy

(A life book is like a journal made from a composition book that the kids get to decorate)

Somehow I have to link these tasks to earning screen time but I’m not exactly sure what I want to do yet.  I am thinking like they can earn ten minutes of screen time per task so they could earn 5 hours for the weekend.  What would you do??

SUPER SUMMER SCHEDULE {FREE Printable}

IF YOU LIKE THIS, PLEASE CONSIDER PINNING IT! THANKS!
I’ve been working hard trying to figure out how to make this summer work.  With all the packing and things I need to do to prepare for our move, I don’t want my kids sitting in front of the TV all day, bored out of their minds.  I REALLY want them to get to have a fun summer, despite the move.
I’ve been looking for ideas and will be compiling some different things to make a fun summer for my kids.  I came across this
I loved some of their ideas.  I am up in the mountains at my sister’s cabin and I decided to work out our summer plans while I am up here.  Today I came up with theme days for our week days.  I made this cute printable to share with my readers.  I haven’t printed it yet, so if you print it and the colors are awful, please tell me.  I have no printer up here to try it out on.

SUMMER READING PROGRAM

One of the BIGGEST, most IMPORTANT things I want to implement this summer is A LOT of daily reading for my kids! I am soooo tired of TV I can’t even tell you. I think the effect of TV, especially TODAY’S programming, on kids is absolutely awful.  When we move, I am thinking of not getting TV hooked up, at least for a good, long while!

Have you heard of How Does She?  It is a site packed full of fun ideas. If you sign up for their email list they will send you passwords to be able to download some of their fun printables.

I recently got an email from them containing a password for printables for a

 Summer Reading Program!

It is super cute and I think it will be so fun for my kids! You can read all about the program HERE

I am hoping they will add a blank bingo board so we can fill in our own ideas for places for our kids to read.  If you like that idea, I hope you will ask them to do it for us!

THE MAN CAKE {Father’s Day}

IF YOU LIKE THIS POST, PLEASE CONSIDER PINNING IT. THANKS!

Father’s Day is Sunday!  I am excited to celebrate the amazing men in my life.  I have the best father ever and my husband is such an amazing man as well.

Last year I made this MAN CAKE for my husband for Father’s Day and I have decided it has to become a tradition.  It was fantastic and super fun!

 FIND OUT HOW TO MAKE IT HERE!!

This year I am considering using crepes instead of pancakes.  Making giant pancakes is the hardest part and I thought maybe making crepes would be a little easier and could be done the day before.

Anyway, I hope you will be celebrating the amazing men in your life!  What are you doing to celebrate?

4TH of JULY STAR {Upcycle}

IF YOU LIKE THIS, PLEASE CONSIDER PINNING IT. THANKS!

This is a post from past year.  Since I am moving in less than 2 months, I don’t have a lot of time to be crafting so I thought it would be fun to re-visit some old posts.  Hope you think so, too!

Here is a super easy, super fast re-do of an orange tin star I had laying around.

BEFORE:

AFTER:

I simply spray painted the star white and added blue vinyl stars and red vinyl stripes. I cut the stars with my Silhouette, but you could just use some cute stickers if you don’t have one. I hand cut the stripes from a piece of red vinyl, but you could also just use some red tape which would be easier.

Here is that hutch I was telling you about that my neighbor gave me. Isn’t it cute? I don’t have a lot of 4th of July decorations, but I am trying to get some things together to make it look cuter. But this is how it is for now:

I want to paint this thing white and give it an old chippy finish. Hopefully soon!!

RED, WHITE, & BLUE CUPCAKES in a JAR with FLOUR FROSTING

IF YOU LIKE THIS, PLEASE CONSIDER PINNING IT. THANKS!

This is an old post but 4th of JULY is coming up and these are super cute!

Well, today I decided to spend some time with my 4 year old making some cupcakes in a jar. We made these from a white cake mix. We simply made the mix according to package directions, divided the batter into 3 equal parts, tinted one red and one blue, and layered the colors into jars sprayed with cooking spray. I used a cookie scoop to put the batter into the jars, but had to use a baby spoon to spread out the white and red batter. It would probably work better to put the batter in pastry bags or Ziploc bags with the corner cut off and pipe it into the jars in even layers. We baked them on a cookie sheet for 25 minutes or until they sprung back a little when gently pushed in the center.

NOTE: I used 1 cup wide mouth jars. I think I am in love with these jars and will be making more things in them. They are just soooo cute!

Here they are before they were baked:

Here they are after:

I left them on the counter to cool and this is what happened, compliments of my two year old:

Here is how he got up there:

He is a stinker. Good thing he is super cute:

Well, I went looking for a recipe for some new kind of frosting so I could try out something new. I came across a recipe that uses flour several times and everyone was raving about it. I read many different versions, but decided to use the one I found HERE on The Girl Who Ate Everything. I think she got it from The Pioneer Woman.

IMG_5865_thumb1

I had my doubts that it could REALLY be as good as everyone claimed. But I decided to put the recipe to the test.

Here are my notes on making it:

1. Add the flour to COLD milk in a COLD pan and make sure it is fully whisked together before turning on the heat-this helps avoid clumps.

2. When you cook the milk and flour together it will get REALLY thick…like the skin on a pudding thick. That is ok. Just don’t burn it.

3. Beat the butter and sugar together for a LONG time, like 5 minutes. Be sure to scrape down the bowl several times. If you don’t mix it long enough, you will have grainy sugar in your frosting.

4. It doesn’t take as long to cool the flour mixture down as you think. Stick it in the freezer while you beat the butter and sugar and it will be done when you are ready for it.

5. Beat the flour mixture with the butter mixture for another 5 minutes. It won’t ruin it. You can’t overbeat it, I don’t think. It just makes it silkier.

IMG_5873_thumb

Well, I have to admit this is a really good buttercream. I am not a fan of most buttercream frostings….too sweet for me. But this one is not as sweet as most. It has a very smooth and silky texture and is a little lighter in feel than a traditional buttercream. I think it would lend itself well to some fruity flavors, like lemon or a raspberry puree. I read that a lot of people have problems getting it to turn out. I had no problems. It was pretty easy. I think the key is just to beat everything really well.

I will say it has quite a buttery flavor. I think it might be better if it had 1/2 c. more sugar. But then maybe all the sugar would not dissolve. But it was ALMOST too buttery I wonder how it would taste on chocolate cake. Probably pretty good. UPDATE: I think when I made this I might have left out the vanilla on accident. I made this frosting again recently and I really did like it! Give it a try!

I prefer cream cheese frosting, but you can’t ALWAYS use it so this is a good substitute. Give it a try and let me know what you think!

CAUTION: This frosting MIGHT make your kid look like this:

SUMMER TO-DO LIST {Summer}

IF YOU LIKE THIS POST, PLEASE CONSIDER PINNING IT TO PINTEREST! THANKS

I posted this last summer, but thought it would be fun to re-post for the newcomers to ReMarkable Home.  Hope you like it!

We have a wall in our stairwell.  Years ago we followed a tradition of my husband’s family and created a picture wall on that blank space.  The picture wall was just hundreds of snapshots stapled to the wall so that they overlapped.  There were a few enlargements as well.  We would put up pictures of our friends and family and cute shots of our kid or pictures of memorable events.  It was fun.  But I got tired of it having no rhyme or reason.

So, I decided the pictures needed a frame to go in.  So, down came the pictures.  I got some molding to make a frame, but was too afraid to attempt it on my own.  So, maybe a year later my younger sister Jennifer, who is very handy and knows how to build things, came into town and helped me get the frame up.  After that I just needed to fill the nail holes and paint it and then re-hang the pictures.  Well, 4 or 5 years later I still haven’t gotten it done!  This is the story of my life.  We lived without a sink in our downstairs bathroom for about 4 years because it took me that long to complete the project of a vessel sink made from a bowl on a little antique dresser.

Anyway, since I never painted the frame and put the pictures back up, this space has been used for some different things.  Currently, it is housing our SUMMER TO-DO LIST, which is the main topic of this post!  Here it is!

IMG_5640_thumb

I cut 12x12 paper (this is from Wal-Mart) into quarters so I had 6x6 squares.  Then I made 4x4 squares with the activities printed in them.  I used 8 different fonts.  I attached the white squares to the scrapbook paper squares with double stick tape.  Originally I was going to do a banner with these, but I got a little carried away and made close to 80 squares!  So, the banner would have been longer than my house!  So, instead, I used sticky tack to put these up in my frame.  They make it look must more cheerful!  Don’t mind the old paint.  There is also a hole one of my precious boys kicked in the wall when he was mad!  Aren’t kids so fun???!!!

IMG_5635_thumb

Now, I want you to know this is not perfect.  Nothing I do ever is!  Do they fit in the frame perfectly??  NO.  Are the squares perfectly square?  NO.  Did my printer cut off the border on some of the squares?  YES.  Do I dislike one of the fonts I chose?  YES.  But, since I am fighting perfectionism I just let all of these things be.  It doesn’t change the fact that we are going to have a super fun summer!  My kids are VERY excited about all these activities.  I am hoping it keeps them from being complete couch potatoes this summer.  But, I must admit I am worried I will not be able to keep up with this plan!!!

IMG_5633_thumb

For those who might like to see my list more clearly, here it is!  ALSO, we will be needing friends to accompany us in some of these activities.  So I hope some of my Vegas friends will let me know what they would like to do with us!
