Do your kids do chores? Do you have a working system? I find that every working system fails at some point. I mean, I am always having to come up with fresh new ideas for a chore system. I’m not sure why. Maybe when I bring out a new system the kids get excited and try extra hard to keep up with their chores. Or maybe it’s that I get lazy on follow through after awhile. I don’t know. But I do know I need help around the house! I can’t do all the work myself. I just don’t have that much energy. And I also know that my kids need to learn the value of hard work. I don’t want to be raising a bunch of boys with entitlement issues.
So, when we moved to this house 6 months ago I knew we were going to need a new chore system. This house is 3 times the size of my old house (it’s my sister’s house that we are living in while her family is serving as mission leaders for our church). So, I need a lot of help from my kids.
After talking to my younger sister about her chore chart, I decided on this system. The beauty of it is that the kids are incentivized to get their chores done right away because they get to pick the chores they want to do on a first come, first served basis. So, if you do your chores first you get to pick the best jobs!
I created this in Word with a table. I started with a basic table and then split and merged cells as necessary. The way it works is under each chore is the name of each child expected to be able to do that chore. My 3 year old’s name (Luke) isn’t under all of them. When they complete a chore they cross off their name. Mine is laminated so we use dry erase markers, but you could also just print it out each day/week. At the bottom is how we track the points. If they did all their daily chores on Monday, we mark off Monday. For each weekly chore they did they mark off a number. Get it? Then we add up all the marks and those are their points for the week. Then they earn money based on the amount of points they earned.
It seems to be a good system for us. They like seeing it all and knowing just what needs to be done. When everyone does their chores the house is very neat and tidy and clean, which we all love!

ReplyDeleteI think you just try to think about how much "allowance" you want to pay your kids each week and then divide by the points. It just depends on your family's view on money for kids and your budget. I am not paying my kids for chores right now but I think I did about 25 cents per point.
DeleteI love your chore chart. I would love to use it, but can't figure out how to download it. I clicked on the social whisper button and connected through fb, but still can't figure out how to get the download. If you could help that would be great. Thank you so much.
